Matt Fitzpatrick Talks Open Championship

Amid the rolling dunes and rugged coastline of Scotland, where the relentless wind and whispering waves shape both land and legend, lies Royal Troon Golf Club, the storied stage for this year's Open Championship. Steeped in history and tradition, the links course has borne witness to countless tales of triumph and heartache since its inception in 1878. As players step onto its hallowed fairways, they face not only the physical challenge of the course but also the intangible weight of its legacy.

To get a closer look at the the magnificent event, we had the chance to sit down with Arccos Tour Ambassador, Matt Fitzpatrick, to discuss his thoughts, preparations, and aspirations for this week’s spectacle. From favorite holes to strategic game plans, and the invaluable role of Arccos’ Insights, our conversation delves into the mindset of top player, Fitzpatrick as he prepares to compete on one of golf's grandest stages at Royal Troon

Are you looking forward to The Open?

  • "I am looking forward to The Open. Troon is a good golf course, and it will be a great event."

Do you have a favorite hole at Troon?

  • "At Troon... it's been, what... I was there in '16 when I last played, so I can't really remember the golf course that well. It's going to take me a bit to remember. Obviously, everyone knows the Postage Stamp."

How do you prepare for major events like The Open? Is there a game plan you have for Royal Troon?

  • "No, not particularly. Again, it depends on how the course plays that week. If we get there and they've had a lot of rain, it’s going to be softer, and you'll try to make a few more birdies. If they've had good weather, which is potentially unlikely in Scotland, you'll get dry, firmer conditions, making it definitely a lot harder. We'll have to see. I like to look at the course history—maybe what scores won there in the past, maybe what statistics you need to do well around there, whether it's driving, approach play, or putting. You know, it could be a combination of a couple of those. That's something we might focus on leading up to the event. We'll look at working on maybe more driving or approach play or whatever it may be. So, it's about looking at history and statistics to help guide us in our preparation."

How does Arccos Pro Insights help you prepare?

  • "You know, working with Eduardo to get those answers, me and my team will be in touch with Ed to get these course guides that he produces with the Pro Insights. From that, we can create a game plan for how we're going to attack the golf course, whether it's in preparation or strategy come game day. All these different aspects can help us improve and give us a chance to win come Sunday."

What would it mean for you to win the Claret Jug?

  • "Yeah, it would mean the world. It really would. To win any major would be so special, and to win The Open Championship would be magical."

How would your hometown react if you won?

  • "They'd be thrilled. Back home, I think there'd be a lot of celebrating. It'd go down very, very well, as you can probably imagine. But, yeah, it'd be exciting. It's just a few weeks away. I've got a lot of prep time in the meantime, and I’ve got to get ready to go perform."

With a blend of history, strategic planning, and the support of cutting-edge tools like Arccos’ Insights, Fitzpatrick is well-equipped to tackle the challenges Troon may have this week. We look forward to seeing how the week unfolds and wish him the best of luck to hopefully hoist the Claret Jug on Sunday.
